about

“Dan Bern is like a Harry Chapin for the new
century.”--Tony Kornheiser

This project is a collaboration between me and Jonathan Flaugher and a bunch of great musicians. Jonathan produced my last full-on studio record, “Regent Street” which came out in 2019. He’d put together a great band—a bunch of guys from Dawes, plus some of the best musicians in LA. We were gonna do a new studio project this year, but suddenly....no one was going anywhere.I started sending Flaugher songs. I’d record just my vocal and either guitar or piano. I recorded to a click so it’d be in time. Flaugher took it from there. His bass is pulsing and popping and bouncing through all of it. He sent to a few of his cohorts, and this cool thing emerged.

1. Clear
I wrote this song in late July of 2020, while at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, CA. I basically had the whole place to myself for some days. A mountainside of redwoods, a creek, an little cabin, a stove, and Henry’s
ghost to talk to. “Clear” tumbled out.

2. Butterflies
I wrote this as part of a project at the LA Mission called “In Harmony With the Homeless.” They paired up songwriters with folks who’d been homeless but were working their way toward better. "Butterflies” is
Duane Mackey’s story. A reflection on his young self, lashing out against the world....and looking back now.

3. George Floyd
Everybody knows the events. Everyone’s seenthe images. Songs can last longer than tweets or Facebook posts. The “George Floyd” song--Maybe someone will sing it at a campfire in 2105.

4.Reach
A couple of years ago I had an accident with a snowblower. I stuck my hand in and it bit off acouple of my fingertips. For awhile I experimented with this-or-that device, to extend my reach. They all sort of didthe job but they were all clunky. Finally I let them all go. You don’t need more Reach. You just gotta Reach more.

5. Shining
I was thinking about Star Wars. And the darkside. And how, in certain times and places, you just gotta keep the flame from going out.

My friend Eric Ward quotes Dr. Vincent Harding:
“I am a citizen of a country that does not yet exist.”
